It struck me this morning when reading the words of Habakkuk the Old Testament prophet how God uses two beautiful elements to convey His messages. Word and music/song.

The prophet's words finished with the wonderful declaration:

The Sovereign Lord is My strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.'

Then came the direction to give this prophecy to the director of music. Why?  So that these vital words could be conveyed with the accompanment of stringed musical instruments.

Music, that powerful vehicle of God's messeage.

In the prophet Samuel's time the prophets were surrounded by music and it often was the vehicle for their messages.

The prophet Elisha was requested to bring a message to a leadership alliance meeting. He asked for a harpist to be brought and as the harpist played the word of the Lord came to Elisha and he delivered it to the leaders.

Both word and music are from God our Creator and were present at creation. These are rich gifts that continue today and are an integral part of pilgrimage. We are people of life giving word and music, it is our home.
