Our previous reading about leaving the season of strength left King David in turmoil and uncertainty regarding his purpose and place in life.

If he was not the strong energetic warrior/leader of his men now, what was he? There was a new season for him but until he realised it and embraced it that period was miserable. Something many have found as the period of life marked by strength, projects, position, purpose comes to an end. And even exit from strength can be dramatic as it becomes apparent through health collapse.

There was no immediate awareness of his new role and the unrest continued.

However there was one statement made by David's men that provided the key for the future purpose for this man.

They had said to the King that they would not allow him to go into battle with them again. Easily interpreted as being  not wanted because weak and actually a liability to the army.

But that was not all they said for they went on to say, "...because you are the inspiration of Israel and we cannot afford to lose you. We need you..."

What that statement contained was a gem that gives understanding for the season of Autumn/Senior pilgrim.

Rather than King David going from the season of strength to the scrap heap he was destined  to a vital role, example and inspiration for those coming on. Interestingly that did not come from his own insight but from those who were replacing him as strong warriors. They placed value on him, they saw the power of his example and achievements, the power of his presence.

They said in effect that, we do not need you here, for that is our responsibilty, BUT WE NEED YOU THERE!! A presence, example, encouragement.

There came the time when King David embraced and relished his role and the latter part of his rule was taken up with encouraging, advising, building up and resourcing the new generation of leaders. They flourished in their day of strength with increased energy from the presence of the older King and those of his peers. Those seasoned veterans.

A significant time in my ministry was leading Salvation Army Corps (Churches) as Corps Officer (Pastor). While there was the joy of young people and the fellowship of working with strong leaders that is part of such work there was another element that nurtured it all.

Older saints, retired Officers, veterans in the faith who by their very presence and loyalty brought a wholesome sense of assurance. They could see beyond immediate concerns and brought a sense that all would be well. How we needed them, they were the inspiration of Israel.

Exiting the season of strength brings entry to the season of encourager, supporter and inspiration. A rich season indeed.
